September 21, 1931 – March 8, 2020

George J. Komp, a Colorado Springs resident since 1973, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2020.  For the past 6 months he lived at Bruce McCandless Veteran Community Living Center in Florence, Colorado.  During the Korean War, he served his country in the Army.  He worked as a heavy equipment operator, which included over 30 years at Schmidt Construction, and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union.

George was born on September 21, 1931 to Henry Philip Komp and Theresa (Baumgartner) Komp in Paris, Arkansas. He married Melva Jo Hobson on August 19, 1958 in Sharon Springs, Kansas.

He is survived by his son, Kevin Ray Komp; daughter-in-law, Natalie; three brothers: Larry, Ed, and Rufus; a sister, Marie Schluterman; and two grandsons: Klint and Justin Komp.  He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Hank; and a sister, Hilda.

George enjoyed being involved in his family members’ lives, whether it be to pass down some wisdom or simply lend a helping hand.  He was a very generous person who always put others first.  He was very close to his brothers and sisters, keeping in touch over the phone or by making numerous trips home throughout his retirement.  He took a great deal of pride in being a mentor and role model in the lives of his grandsons.  His unique outlook on life and compelling storytelling are going to be missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel.  Entombment will take place at Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Garden of Angels.
