March 1, 1971 – January 31, 2021

In Loving Memory of Phillip Ramon Bonilla who entered eternal life with our Lord and Savior on January 31, 2021 at the age of 49.

Phillip was born on March 1, 1971 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Ricardo Ramon Bonilla-Cortez and Betty Frances Serna.

Phillip lived with his mother and sisters in Colorado Springs until the age of 5. He then lived with his Paternal Grandparents Juaquin and Olga Bonilla in Los Angeles, California where he attended Catholic School and was a very good student. He had his 1st Holy Communion on April 29, 1979 and received the Sacraments of the Catholic Church on May 17, 1985 at Mother of Sorrows Church from Cardinal Timothy Manning. He always maintained his strong belief in God and the Catholic Church.

Phillip returned to Colorado Springs at the age of 16 and earned his GED. He spent most of his adult life as a car mechanic and was always a very hard worker. He was known for always “tinkering around” on his own vehicle or working on cars for his family and friends and covered in grease, except when he would proudly dress-up for church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family, listening to oldies, and reading his Bible. Occasionally would he gaze at himself in the mirror, flex his muscles, say out loud “Orale” and express how good looking he was (even if he was only, all of 5’2”). 🙂

Although he often struggled with his own shortcomings, he would quote scripture or send Bible verses to his family every morning, and would always end a telephone call by saying “Always remember you are a precious child of God!”

Phillip is survived and will be missed by the following family members: Paternal Grandmother Olga Bonilla (97) (Los Angeles, California); Daughter Pebbles Hopke and his 3 grandchildren that he adored, Gage, Sage, and Nico (Colorado Springs); Sisters: Yvonne (Bonnie) Serna (53) and Carmelita Serna (46) of Colorado Springs, and Treasure Ann Bonilla (38) of Empire Valley, California; (4) Nephews: Miguel, Lucas, Joseph and James; (1) Niece: Rebecca; (1) Great Nephew: Joseph (Chico); and (5) Great Nieces: Natalie, Hailie, Santiana, Dahlia, and Alena; Paternal Uncle Roberto Bonilla and his two sons Edgar and Adrian (Los Angeles, California); Maternal Uncles: Larry Baca, Jose Baca, and Carlos Baca; Maternal Aunts: Anna Aguilar, Esther Vera Trudy Hilliard, and Ruth Morris; 16 Maternal cousins: (8) boys, Miles, Christopher, Vincent, B-Troy, Lenin, Joshua, William and Daniel and (9) Girls, Lora, Michelle, Angela, Rebecca, Alicia, Sandra, Neeva, and Samantha.

Phillip was preceded in death by his father Ricardo Ramon Bonilla-Cortez, his mother Betty Frances Serna, his Sister Edith Robin Serna, Nephew Luis Chavez, Paternal Grandfather Juaquin Bonilla, Maternal Grandfather Rosendo Baca, Maternal Grandmother Carlotta Gonzales, Maternal Uncle David Baca, and Maternal Aunts: Teresa Carly, and Cindy Sanchez.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2021 with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. all at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado 80910.
