Dorothy L. Stokes, age 87 passed away on September 3, 2016. She was a resident of Colorado Springs for many years and a former resident of Texas.

Dorothy was born in Joaquin, Texas on July 26, 1929 to Walter Greenwood Peters and Mary Ann Holmes-Peters. She was married December 17, 1952 to Johnnie T. Stokes in Center, Texas, moving shortly thereafter to Galveston, Texas.

Dorothy enjoyed sharing her numerous stories of time spent growing up on the family farm in Center, Texas. She was a 1946 graduate of Center High School and a 1948 graduate of Nacogdoches Business College. After graduation from college, she accepted a position with John Hancock Life Insurance as an Office Supervisor in San Antonio, Texas. Dorothy would often say that San Antonio and Galveston were her most favorite places in Texas.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling from Texas to Colorado for family camping trips when her children were very young, finally moving and settling in to the community of Salida, Colorado. She immersed herself in the community by working and volunteering for over 25 years. She was a member of The O.E.S., Topaz Chapter 27, serving as Worthy Matron in 1981. She and Johnnie would return to Texas in 1985, where she accepted a position as Unit Secretary in the Coronary Care Unit, Northeast Medical Center, Humble, Texas receiving many awards for her exceptional work. Upon retirement, she once again would return to her beloved state of Colorado.

She is survived by siblings: Kenneth Peters of Watauga, Texas and Elizabeth Muller of Texas; her children: John W. Stokes of Riverdale, Utah, Michael Stokes of New Braunfels, Texas and Susan McComas of Colorado Springs, Colorado; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie T. Stokes.

Some of the people waiting for us in Heaven ….are not “people” at all. All of her beloved pets are waiting too.

Dorothy will be laid to rest next to Johnnie at Fort Logan National Cemetery located in Denver, Colorado.
