Dorris Elizabeth “Liz” Mecham was born on November 3, 1931 in Pennsylvania. Liz was big sister to her only sibling, Sylvia, as Liz was 11 years older. Her parents were Leo and Alma Seiple. Liz was an administrative assistant to high-ranking officers for the United States Air Force. While at Loring Air Force Base in Maine, Liz met Earnest Elmer “Bill” Mecham who was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force at the time. Bill says it was love at first sight.
Liz was always a sophisticated dresser; you could call her a fashionista. From her clothing to her beautiful jewelry, she was one classy lady.
Liz loved to cook for her family and was a wonderful cook. She always cooked enough to feed an army; the family being the lucky recipients of the leftovers. Liz enjoyed entertaining. She would set an elegant table with candles and flowers.
Liz loved to shop, and would tire out her family long before she, herself, was tired. She had exceptional taste in clothing, furniture, and jewelry. Her granddaughters, Jessica and Sami, often reminisce on the shopping trips with their Granny. She enjoyed bargain shopping. Her family called her a shopaholic. She shopped this way up until her late seventies. One of her many joys was shopping for her grandchildren, and always kept them well dressed. As she entered her eighties and could no longer shop from dawn to dusk, she turned to television network shopping and became QVC’s number one customer. Many boxes came, and if she was not satisfied, many boxes left.
She was an incredible record keeper. As we started to look through some of her records, we learned a lot about her life with Bill, and what a pair of scissors cost at Sears in 1960.
Liz enjoyed planning vacations for the family. When her grandchildren started to appear, the vacations were all about them and once again, everything was top notch. The vacations with Liz and Bill are some of the fondest memories of the grandchildren.
Liz loved her dogs that she and Bill have had over the years. She had a tender spot for all animals. Her hope was that she would be reunited with her dogs in Heaven. She was philanthropic to different animal charities throughout her life.
She loved flowers and would create beautiful arrangements that would rival anything you could buy from a florist. She enjoyed decorating for all holidays, especially Christmas. During Christmas her house transformed into a wonderland.
Liz lived life to its fullest. Bill will tell you, she would fit into any crowd and was the life of the party. During their marriage Liz and Bill were stationed in many different cities, and enjoyed them all, their final destination in 1970 was Colorado Springs, Colorado. Liz is survived by her husband, Bill, her son, Michael, and four stepchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mom, and grandmother to numerous grand and great-grandchildren who all loved her very much.
