Ethel Mae Adams
Ethel Mae Adams, age 88, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs and recently of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully at the Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas surrounded by her loving family. She was a homemaker, Army wife, and in her later years worked in various service fields and retired from Pikes Peak Community College.
Ethel Mae Hopkins was born on January 25, 1925 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Jess Hopkins and Frances Everheart. She attended elementary school at Main Street Junior High at 2nd District and High School at Howard in Chattanooga. She married Fred L. A. Adams, Sr. on September 10, 1940 in Chattanooga. She was a military wife for 27 of her 38 years of marriage and was the one who encouraged her husband to become a career soldier. She accompanied him on three tours in Germany and lived stateside in Oklahoma, Texas, Washington and Colorado.
She will be best remembered for her quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, her loyalty, honesty and outspokenness.
She is survived by her five children: Sandra Faye Mosley of Colorado Springs; Freddie Mae Wake (and her husband, MSGT Charles A. M. Sherrill, Sr. USA, Retired) of Las Vegas, Nevada; The Reverend Fred L. A. Adams, Jr. (and wife, Brenda J. Carter-Adams) of Pueblo, Colorado; Torry Y. McKinley and Shani J. Ross, both of Colorado Springs. Mrs. Adams has 8 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Fred; a daughter, Toney T. Hughes; 2 grandsons and her step-brother: Raymond Stargin.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral Services are planned for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. A reception will then be held at the family’s home.
