Frederick “Danny” Mientka passed away on September 26, 2013 at Penrose St. Francis Hospice. Danny was born on May 18, 1924 in Northampton and raised in Amherst, Massachusetts by Anthony Mientka and Cora Kos. The roots of Danny’s hearty work ethic were established early in his life during the Great Depression. After graduating high school he joined the United States Coast Guard where he was deployed and honorably served in the South Pacific during the Second World War. Following his military service Danny began working for Colorado Interstate Gas in Houston, Texas. When promoted to purchasing manager he moved to Colorado Springs where he settled and raised his family.

In the mid 1960’s Danny helped form the commercial real estate division of the Weidman Company, ultimately establishing his own firm, Equity Realty and Investment Company. Danny enjoyed over four decades of success in investment syndication, land development and commercial brokerage. Danny took pride and joy in seeing his city grow and prosper. He loved the “art of the deal.”

Danny owned and operated numerous restaurants and local watering holes where he forged long lasting friendships. He also served the community he loved in many ways: Chairman of the Colorado Springs Liquor Board, Outstanding Rotarian of the Year in 1983, Co-founder and Chairman of the Board of National Bank of the West, Chairman of the USS Sheliak Society, and served numerous nonprofit and community organizations.

Perhaps Danny’s greatest passion was food. Whether he was on a mission to find the best French bread in town or when he was home in his kitchen preparing traditional Polish kielbasa, pierogis, and golumpkis, there was no doubt that he found great satisfaction in all. He rigorously gardened and threw a much-anticipated annual “Harvest Party” where he would serve farm to table meals to family and friends. His parties would not be complete without festive Polka music and dancing in the background. He taught his children how to truly enjoy life through his example.

Danny is survived by his wife Coni, daughter Kellie Callaway, sons Michael and Danny and grandchildren Jessica, Mathew, Hannah, Forge, Gracie, Reagan, Ethan and Jake. He was preceded in death by his children’s mother Bobbi and son Stephen.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, September 30, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Colorado Springs.

Donations may be made to the Rotary Club of North Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Hospice or the National Assistance League.
