John Bernard Sandefur
John B. Sandefur, a long time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away April 3, 2012 at age 87.
John was a continuous Colorado Springs resident following his discharge from active service in the U.S. Marine Corp. He continued his service for 17-1/2 years in the USMC reserves, attaining the rank of Major. He was a graduate of Northern Colorado University and was a teacher in SD-11, Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1950 until his retirement.
He was a long time member of the Nob Hill Lions Clubs, a Melvin Jones Fellow, and a former Mason. John was also a 61-year supporter of the Grace Episcopal Church.
John is survived by a son, William L. Sandefur of Kearny, Arizona; a granddaughter, Sara Sandefur of Denver, Colorado; a sister, C. Joan Myers Chaney of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother, Donald J. Sandefur of Peoria, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Katrina Patterson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Iris; two sons: John, Jr., and Brian; a daughter, Elizabeth; a brother, Harold T. Sandefur; and a sister, Frances M. Brown.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2012 at Grace and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 601 North Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903. A reception will follow the services at the church. Private interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name may be made to Interim Hospice at Interim HealthCare of Colorado Springs, 1901 North Union Boulevard, Suite 202, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909 or to Grace Episcopal Church.
