John C. Knull

John C. Knull, age 76, a lifelong resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013 at his home after a short illness. He had retired from the City of Colorado Springs Utilities Department in the machine welding shop. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

John Charles Knull was born on August 3, 1936 on the Westside of Colorado Springs, Colorado to Roy and Jean (McMillin) Knull. He was a 1954 graduate of Colorado Springs High School. He served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962 and was stationed in Korea and at Fort Carson. He married Joan Jens on August 30, 1968 in Colorado Springs. He was involved in stock car racing, and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. His car, #52 was in the Manitou Car Museum until it was purchased by an interest buyer and moved to New York City.

He worked for the City of Colorado Springs Utilities for 34 years and retired in 1991. He was an avid race car fan, and enjoyed bowling, the polka club, boating at Lake Meredith, Christmas displays, construction, and metal working.

He will be best remembered for his honesty, sense of humor, creativity, and love of his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan of Colorado Springs; and his children: Donna (husband Joey) Corley of Gallup, New Mexico; Randy (wife Tammy) Knull of Colorado Springs; and Phyllis Schimpf of Guffey, Colorado. He is also survived by a sister, Phyllis (husband Jim) Butler; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Chris, in 2008; his parents; and a sister, Zelma Inman.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral Services are planned for 10 a.m. on Friday at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. A reception will follow at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 South Union Boulevard. Private entombment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Gate of Heaven.
