John James Novotny – December 7, 2025

John James Novotny, born December 21, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, entered into eternal rest on December 7, 2025. He was the beloved son of John and Rose Novotny, and from an early age displayed an adventurous spirit, an eagerness to learn, and a deep curiosity about the world around him. Throughout his life he enjoyed many projects around the house that made life easier for his family, one of which (a set of hand controls that he designed and created) enabled his son John to drive a car. His attention to detail in all that he did was not only noticed but respected by all who worked with him.

In 1952, John was introduced to the love of his life, Dolores Pauline, by his sister Dorothy. Their friendship quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and they were married on August 28, 1954, in Berwyn, Illinois. After John’s service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was stationed at Fort Carson and fell in love with the beauty of Colorado—the couple moved west to begin their life together. Their extraordinary union, grounded in faith, friendship, and unwavering devotion, lasted nearly 71 years.

John was preceded in death by his beloved Dolores, his life partner of nearly 71 years, whose passing left a profound absence in his heart. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, John Gerard, who passed in 1992. In a poignant and deeply meaningful coincidence, John Sr. passed on the same date as his son’s birthday, December 7.

Together, John and Dolores built a life centered around family, faith, and community. They were faithful members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument for more than 50 years, worshipping and giving generously to their community. John was in claims management in the insurance industry for over 30 years, where he served his clients with integrity and care.

Deeply community-minded, John was a proud member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus, and he volunteered with Tri-Lakes Cares. He also dedicated time to improving the community for future generations, including helping build playgrounds at Palmer Lake Elementary School.

A true patriot and lifelong supporter of the military and all service members, John honored his country through his Army service in the Korean War and through his steadfast encouragement of veterans and first responders throughout his life. One of John’s favorite things to do in retirement was to help teach youth gun safety classes. During his Service years he was rated as an Expert Marksman and enjoyed teaching the youth and sharing a story or two.

John was known by many endearing names—Papa, Gigi Pa, Johnny Rambo, and Kowalski—each one a reflection of the warmth, humor, and strength he brought to his family. He was the cherished great-grandfather of ten children, with his eleventh great-grandchild arriving in January 2026. His love of history, and the knowledge he eagerly shared, has been passed on as a treasured legacy to his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his children: James Novotny (Nancy), Judi Havens (Jeff), and Paul Novotny (Wendy); his sister, Rose O’Donnell (WI); nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren, with one more soon to join the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly requested that memorial donations be made to Pikes Peak Palliative and Hospice Care in Colorado Springs and the Tunnel to Towers National Program for veterans and first responders.

John’s life was one of faith, service, love, and curiosity—a life well-lived, a true patriot, and a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His sense of humor, can-do spirit and love of family and friends will be missed forever.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson St, Monument, CO 80132.

John’s final resting place will be in the Sanctuary of Love at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80910.
