Lester Douglas “Doug” Nixon
Doug Nixon, a resident of Colorado Springs for 38 years, passed away March 11, 2013, on his 85th birthday.
Lester Douglas Nixon was born on March 11, 1928 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Lester William and Maudine Louie (Smith) Nixon, and was raised in El Dorado, Kansas. He married Marlene Peterson on July 25, 1959 in Emporia, Kansas.
He attended Butler Community College and later Colorado State University (CO A&M) where he received his BS in Industrial Arts in 1953 and his Master’s degree in 1954. He attended the University of Wyoming and received his EdD in 1969.
He enlisted in the Army in 1946 and served in the Army Air Corps and Air Force before receiving his commission in the Air Force Reserves in 1952. He served in the Air Force Reserves, primarily with the Medical Service Corps, until his retirement in 1988 with the rank of Colonel. During his service he received numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a long time member of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Doug began his career in education teaching industrial arts in Wichita, Kansas. In 1968 the family moved to Billings, Montana where he was the Media Services Director at Eastern Montana College. In 1975 the family moved to Colorado Springs where he continued in various education administration positions.
His involvement in the Boy Scouts of America continued throughout his life. Doug held several positions with various packs, troops and councils and was active in Order of the Arrow and Woodbadge activities. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the Silver Beaver.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of 53 years; his two sons: David (wife, Patricia) Nixon of Colorado Springs, and Tim Nixon of Las Vegas, New Mexico; and 3 grandchildren: James, Krista, and Gilbert; two brothers: Keith (wife, Louise) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Wendell (wife, Shirley) of Centennial, Colorado; and 6 nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with a visitation 1 hour prior at Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. Private burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doug’s name may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Pikes Peak Council, 985 West Fillmore, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.
