Peggy J. Matthews passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 26, 2026. She was 97 years old.
Joanne was born September 19, 1928, in Moundsville, West Virginia. She was raised in Canton, OH, until the age of 18 by her parents Floyd and Katherine Postlethwait and siblings: Raymond, Betty, Mary Lou, and Butch.
Joanne met and fell in love and married Frank D. Matthews, Jr., on November 20, 1946. They were married for 64 years.
The couple welcomed their daughter, Gladys, on October 9, 1947.
They then moved to Colorado Springs, CO, in 1953.
Joanne worked for Mountain Bell from May 16, 1962, till retirement on May 16, 1992.
Joanne loved making quilts which she always gave to special people in her life.
She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for over 30 years.
Joanne is survived by her daughter, Gladys Kifer of Colorado Springs; her brother, Floyd (Butch) Postlethwait of Canton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; granddaughter, Rochelle (Ernie) Wooten; 5 great-grandchildren: Ian, Audrie, Susan, Aron and Kylie; 8 great-great grandchildren, Alyn, Hazeleigh; and 6 bonus great-great grandchildren.
Joanne was preceded in by her husband, Frank D. Matthews, Jr.; her parents, Floyd and Katherine; her brother, Raymond; and her sisters, Betty and Mary Lou.
Joanne never met a stranger and was a very outgoing individual. She always claimed to be stubborn, ornery (also old and cold).
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4925 Farmingdale Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80917.
A reception with a light lunch will be held downstairs at the church.
Flowers can be sent to family of Gladys Kifer at her home.
Memorials in Joanne’s name may be sent to Saint Jude’s Children Hospital.
