December 17, 2014

Tressie A. “Toni” Stiner was called home on December 17, 2014. She was born on August 23, 1927 in Pryor, Oklahoma to Bill and Juanita (Richardson) Howerton. Toni was raised by her step-father, Maurice L. Carlton and her mother in Colorado from the age of 6 weeks. She always claimed she was a native.

In a time when women had few professional opportunities, Toni was given an old beauty school textbook and $25.00 by a friend to start beauty school. For one year she went to school during the day and worked nights at the old Garth’s Drive Inn so she could get her beautician license. In 1964 she started her own beauty salon in her current residence and continued working until the age of 81. Toni was known for her dignity, artwork, gardening, service to the Baha’i’ community, sense of humor, love of dance and integrity. Toni was always on a quest for knowledge.

Toni is survived by her daughter, Star (Fred) Harmon of Colorado Springs and several grand-children: Mara (Morgan) Spriggs and their children: Ben, Erica and Arianna; Darren (Christina) Stone and their children: Hazel and Alyssa, all of Oregon; Derrick (Sharon) Stone and their children: Simon and Leo, of Virginia; Alisha (Steve) Easterling and their children: Becca and Amber, of Colorado Springs; and Keturah (Marc) King and their daughter, Onreah, of Colorado Springs. Toni is also survived by her sister, Barbara (Steve) Boots of Colorado Springs and her brother, Tommy (Jean) Carlton of Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Mark L. Stiner Starr; brothers: Charles Howerton, John Evarts, Bob and Don Carlton and her sister Nada Jeffries.

A committal Baha’i’ service and entombment will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home in the “Gate of Heaven Mausoleum.” A memorial service and reception will follow at 4:30 p.m. at the Baha’i’ Center, 1622 Rainier Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
