Barbara attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Long Beach City College before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, where she also completed graduate studies. She continued additional coursework at Long Beach State College.
Barbara dedicated much of her life to both teaching and caring for her family. While teaching in Carmel, California, she met her husband, Burdette Blumer. The two were married on July 28, 1956, in Long Beach, California, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in service, family, and community.
As the wife of an Army officer, Barbara embraced military life. Together with their two sons, Mike and Marc, the family lived at numerous military posts throughout the United States and overseas. Mike and Marc were born while the family was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Throughout those years, Barbara served in many supportive roles while continuing to teach whenever possible.
Following Burdette’s retirement from the Army in 1974, the family settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Barbara resumed her teaching career with District 11. After 44 years in Colorado Springs, Barbara and Burdette moved to Littleton to be closer to family.
Barbara was an active member and past president of the Retired Officers’ Wives Club, an active member of the El Paso County Republican Women, and a lifelong Episcopalian. She found joy in sewing, reading, cooking, tending to her flowers both indoors and out, and traveling.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Syd; her beloved husband, Burdette; and her grandson, Dustin.
She is survived by her sons: Mike (Jane) Blumer of Morrison, Colorado, and Marc (Patti) Blumer of Cañon City, Colorado; her grandchildren: Lea (Matt), Ryan (Tara), and Greg; her great-grandchildren, CJ and Caleb; and her step-great-grandchildren, Matthew and Austin.
