It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald “Don” Julius Newton who, on May 24, 2026, completed his journey on earth and moved on to his eternal resting place at the age of 90. He was a resident of Colorado Springs, CO for nearly 40 years, cumulatively, and a fully retired Chief Master Sergeant for the United States Air Force. He was a proud father and grandfather, and a loving husband.
Donald Newton was born on September 24, 1935, to Otis Calvin Newton and Maudie Frances (Griffith) Newton in Bakersfield, CA. On February 12, 1956, he married Frances Yvonne Gilliam in Bakersfield, CA.
Don served in the United States Air Force for more than 22 years. He lived and served all over the world, finishing his USAF career in Colorado Springs at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and, finally, Peterson Air Force Base. He is a Vietnam War veteran, and a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Gold Conduct Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal, among other recognitions.
Don was also an avid woodworker. He and his wife, Frances, spent many years post-retirement selling their award-winning hand-designed, cut, and painted creations at various craft shows and artist events around the country.
He is survived by his children: Michael William Newton (and spouse, Shawna Nero Newton), Matthew Allen Newton, and Melanie Lynn Caffrey (and spouse, Thomas Jeffrey Kyte); his siblings: Michael Newton and Ronald Newton; his grandchildren: Marcy Yvonne Newton, Amber Nicole Mendoza, and Tamra Lea Beck; and his ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his brothers: Otis, Alvin, and William; and his spouse, Frances.
We are in the process of planning a celebration of life. It will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs where Don will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife. We will share the date, time, and location here once the details are finalized.
