Lewis Bernard Samuel, better known as Sam to his friends, age 74, passed away on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2026. He was a resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, for over 40 years.
Sam was born on May 24, 1951, to Lewis Govan Samuel and Evelyn Maggie Lowery (nee Waiters) in Washington DC. He grew up primarily in the big city but spent his breaks and summers with his siblings and cousins “in the country” in South Carolina.
He attended Frank W. Ballou high school in DC and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Mallory. After high school, Sam was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served in the military for nearly 15 years. Sam and Barbara had one child together before parting ways. Sam received his Associate in Science degree from Cameron University in 1986. Sam then worked for the USPS as a letter carrier, faithfully “walking his route” no matter the weather, until his retirement.
Sam loved retirement where he could indulge his hobbies of cooking, fishing, people watching and Zumba. He loved visiting his grandchildren in Indiana. He enjoyed RVing across the country, especially to the hot springs in Colorado. He loved to travel internationally, with his favorite place being Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He also made annual visits to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sam was preceded in death by his father, Govan Samuel; his mother, Evelyn Lowery; his brother, Barry O. Samuel; and his sister, Delores LaVonne Cole. He is survived by his daughter, Terri T. Samuel (husband Curtis Wright); his siblings: Brenda Cardwell, Guy Samuel (wife Norma Samuel), and Andrea Lowery; his nephews: Barry E. Samuel (Chantell), Andre Lowery, Riky Lowery-Divers and Darius Lowery-Smith; his niece: Tonya Cole Taffe; and his grandchildren: Lauryn and Isaiah Wright.
A remembrance/celebration of life reception will be held at a later date, TBD.
“Life is short, live it. Love is rare, grab it. Anger is bad, dump it. Fear is awful, face it. Memories are sweet, cherish them.”
