Howard passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026, at the age of 93. He was a resident of Colorado Springs for 48 years. He was a retired USAF fighter pilot with 20 years of service, a retired University of Northern Colorado Program Coordinator, and a retired glider tow pilot at the USAF Academy.
Howard was born on April 10, 1933, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Lester and Thelma (Wise) Crites. On October 1, 1955, he married Margaret Darlene Kokey in Redondo Beach, California.
Along with his passion for flying, Howard was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, backpacking, and camping. He also enjoyed traveling and woodworking. He was a member of the Order of Daedalians, Flight 11, Falcon, and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marge; his son, David (and his wife, Amie); his grandchildren: Haylee, Spencer, and Garrett (and his wife, Adriana); and his great-grandson, Liam. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester; his mother, Thelma; and his two sisters, Patti and Sara.
A graveside service with full military honors was held on October 8, 2026, at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery. A reception followed at the Crites residence.
