After a hard-fought battle with Covid, Marco Sullivan Hughes from Colorado Springs, CO, passed away at UC Health, Memorial Hospital South, on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at the age of 51.

Marco was born at Fort Carson Hospital, in Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, December 26, 1969, to his mother Glenneth Lee Hughes, father George Sullivan Hughes. His older sister, Shanna DeAnne Hughes. His birth was extra special as, not only was he born the day after Christmas, but he was also, one half of another special unknown gift. An identical twin brother, Marlo Gordon Hughes.

Marco grew up in the Southern community of Widefield, Colorado and attended Watson Junior High and Widefield High School. It was at these facilities of education he achieved several state records in track and field. These records were maintained for many years after he graduated from high school. As a superior athlete, he excelled in football and wrestling as well. Marco was a gifted drummer and participated in band activities. One of his greatest musical achievements was the ability to play the drum solo in the famous Phil Collins song, “In the Air Tonight”.

After high school, Marco married his high school sweetheart and joined the United States Air Force. Serving as a Special Police Officer, with the rank as Sergeant. His 10 years of military service took him to Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas, Spangdahlem Air Base, in southern Germany and Panama. While traveling with the Air Force, Marco and Lucia Hughes (Martinez-Kelly), had two children. Marco Sullivan Hughes, Jr., and Jasmine Nicole Hughes (Burman).

Upon discharge from the Air Force, Marco returned home to Colorado Springs where his medical knowledge and gift of care gained him a certification as a CNA for several years. A true Jack of all trades, Marco’s talents lead him to additional jobs. His ability to build or repair anything such as cars, computers, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, offered a glimpse into his sheer genius. A man that loved a good prank, joke and a hearty full belly laugh, his sense of humor kept all laughing throughout his life.

Marco is survived by his mother Glenneth Lee Hughes, the man he began and shared the womb with, Marlo Gordon Hughes, and sister, Shanna DeAnne Hughes. His seven wonderful, beautiful children, Marco Jr., Jasmine, Lyric, Malik, Marlo, Marcus and Sophie. His devoted partner Christina. Aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding him in death, is his father, George Sullivan Hughes and grandparents Gladys M. Dickerson, Geiger Hughes, and Lucille Hughes.

Because of the effects of Covid 19, funeral services will be reserved for family members and invited guests only. Marco requested to be buried at Pikes Peak National Military Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following local charities: NAMI, Springs Rescue Mission or Mount Carmel Veterans Center.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the unnamed staff who cared for Marco during his final days. The doctors and nurses who kept him as comfortable as possible and fought the fight for his life, are heroes. Thank you for everything you did to care for our son, brother, father and friend.
