Rex Herbert Hampton Jr., of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on October 3, 2026 at seventy-nine years old. He was born on December 2, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, and spent his childhood traveling three continents in an army family. He graduated from both Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, earning his MBA.
For twenty-two years, Rex carried the family tradition of military service, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, then served as President of Golden Cycle Gold Corporation until his retirement in 2008. He rooted his life in honesty, integrity, and intellect, and was always up for a water fight with his grandchildren. He had a story for every occasion, a boisterous laugh, willing arms for his children, and a steady heartbeat that could calm any fussy grandbaby. A lover of music, he could often be found belting showtunes in the kitchen as he made pancakes. His popcorn was legendary and chocolate-chip cookies, divine…but he could not be trusted with a pot of tapioca pudding.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of forty-six years, Kristie Lee (née Van Allen) Hampton; his children: Christopher, Matthew (Dori), Kathryn (Matt), Douglas (Lynette), and Rebecca (Jason); and grandchildren: Gabrielle, Jessica, Jamie, Emily, Cullen, Madison, Aaron, Aidan, Brenden, Gavin, Chase, Broderick, Lucas, Audrey-Grace, Michael, and Charlotte; as well as seven great-grandchildren, and his brother Robin (Sherrye). He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Ruth; father, Rex; and sisters, Hope and Maryalice.
He leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, and adored watching things grow: his children, grandchildren, and a garden full of flowers.
