Robert Thomas Schlut – June 1, 2026

Robert Thomas Schlut, born on August 15, 1944 to Robert and Effie Schlut in Milwaukee, WI was the third of four brothers. In his junior year of high school, Bob entered the Christian Brothers. His devotion to a life of service to the Lord eventually took him to Napa, California and he joined the Carmelite Monastery where he lived a simple, prayerful life dedicated to God.

But God, in His wisdom, had more in store for Bob. In San Francisco, he met Mary, the woman who would become his partner in faith and in life. He discerned a new calling-marriage-and followed it with the same devotion he brought to every part of his life. At Mary’s request to live “anywhere other than California, they moved to Colorado and welcomed their first child, Joseph followed 16 months later by twins, Theresa and David.

Life took a sharp turn when, at just 31 and visiting the doctor to investigate a bump and rash under his arm, Bob was diagnosed with cancer and given only a few months to live. Miraculously and with grace, courage, perseverance, the love of his family and lots of prayer he survived. Though the treatments cost him the use of his left arm and caused many health struggles over the years, they never dimmed his spirit. Bob maintained the same steady, humorous, faith filled presence his family relied on.

Bob is remembered by his family and friends as a devoted father and husband. Between him and Mary, they rarely missed any significant event in the lives of their children; from Cross Country meets, Basketball games or Swim meets – they would be there. Bob was a devout Catholic who faithfully served his parish community, was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and found fellowship in his regularly attended Wednesday men’s group.

Bob had a somewhat dry sense of humor, and his jokes would often leave someone dizzy from laughing while also shaking their heads at the same time. This, along with his unique perspectives on life, his gentle curiosity, and ability to make others feel valued were hallmarks of his character. Despite the many hardships and challenges Bob faced in his life, he rarely spoke of them or complained but, instead, preferred to ask questions, listen deeply and learn about the lives of others.

He loved reading, golf, movies, singing, listening to the stories of others, and the simple joys of family life. Above all, he loved the Lord, and he lived that love with humility and quiet strength.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his brothers Michael and James (Sandy); his children Theresa (Dylan), Dave and Joe (Monica); and two grandchildren, Wyatt and Kaia.
