Shane Weingardt

May 12, 1979 – March 30, 2023

Shane Weingardt, 43, of Fountain, CO, passed away on March 30, 2023 after a hard-fought, two year battle with esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1979 to Lawrence and Lodina (Christner) Weingardt in Sterling, CO. On May 20, 2006, he married the love of his life, Kara Null and went on to have two incredible sons, Kian and Lucan. Shane was the best husband and father anyone could ever ask for! He spent 18 years as a correctional officer with the Department of Corrections at Sterling Correctional Facility and La Vista/San Carlos Correctional Facilities before medically retiring in 2022.

Shane’s main passion in life was martial arts, both as a student and an instructor. He was the owner/operator of International Martial Arts and Boxing of Colorado in Sterling, CO and later was the head Muay Thai coach for 719 Fight Team in Colorado Springs, CO. He spent countless hours training with the world’s best and was well respected within the martial arts community. He began training under Mark Smith as a teenager and was quickly teaching kids’ classes, honing his skills. Shane was not just an instructor, but a fighter. He won many Muay Thai fights and in 2004, became the world champion in Kali Escrima. He advanced to the instructor level in many different arts under both Ron Balicki and Dan Inosanto. He was beloved by his students.

Shane is survived by his loving wife, Kara; his two sons, Kian and Lucan; his mother, Lodina; brothers Shawn Weingardt, Phil (Tabitha) Held, Jeff Stocker, and Matthew (Christina) Wood; in-laws Sylvia (Jack) Laird, Don Kuchy, Kathi (Paul) Breshears, Jon (Simone) Null, and Alan (Amanda) Null; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence, instructor Mark Smith, and his grandparents.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. The family asks that everyone come as they are since Shane was not the formal type. In lieu of flowers, please support Shane’s sons by donating to the GoFundMe(https://gofund.me/7e1bd247) that has been set up.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of both Pikes Peak Hospice and the Memorial Central oncology team for their care, compassion, and support through Shane’s final days.

I am so sorry for your loss. Words will never be enough. I’ve been following Shane’s fight through FB and sending prayers for a miracle.
Remembering SMS AND SHS, all memories of Shane include Phil. They were always together and never doing anything mean to classmates as most others were.
I’m sure your hearts are broken. He should have had longer with you…my husband lost his mom to cancer when he was a kid. We are especially keeping your sons in our thoughts.
    I’m sending my heartfelt condolences.
